Director Ryu Seung-wan's shooting sketch
for No Blood No Tears
Inchon Harbor Car Chase Scene
: 2001. 9 .5 Inchon Harbor
Inchon is a noir city. Inchon's night scene is like the thick fog
covering the city in Hong Kong movies. Today's car chase scene will
be shot at the best location yet. At this place, the most dangerous
car stunt will unfold as we'll shoot the cars crashing and flying
through midair. It's the scene where Captain Ma-bak is chasing after
Gyung-sun after she steals a bag full of cash from the dogfight.
Keeping the cars' speed at 80km per hour along with all the fog
and the large-scaled shipping work going on at Inchon's ports were
big obstacles to face. There were around 30 cars we had to work
with.
A wall of sandbags and three cameras were prepared for the shoot.
Martial arts choreographer, JUNG Du-hong, makes an attempt at putting
his car airborne and overturning it. Since it's a dangerous task,
it can only happen once. At the crucial moment, the car's wheel
kept spinning in midair so I couldn't yell cut. But after seeing
the dailies, the result was very satisfying.
The Macho's Feast of no blood no tears - the Dogfight Ring
: 2001. 9. 14 Seoul Cinema Complex
The film's main stage is the dogfight ring. Not even 1mm was overlooked
in the making of this detailed set. The ring is dark and damp and
smells as if the money is drenched with sweat. For the shoot, there
was a real dogfight inside the ring, and everyone got tense.
The dogs even seemed to understand my direction. The dogs fighting
until first blood is drawn and the machos on the floor watching
it unusually looked the same. About 300 extras acting was chaotic.
They were uncontrollable. I screamed so much, my voice was gone.
To make matters worse, JUN Doh-yeon and JUNG Jae-young hurt their
fingers on the barbed wire. Still a long a way to go.
Bulldog vs. Two Women, a Gruesome Fight at a Warehouse
: 2001. 10. 20 Abandoned Factory in Susaek district
"Coming from someone with experience, getting hit rather than
hitting someone is harder to act," is what LEE Hye-young said.
I agree with her. To fight more stylishly and more real, Soo-jin
and Gyung-sun's bodies got all bruised up. Without using doubles
for this scene, the actresses wore diving suits to prevent any injuries,
but their movements were heavier. For the climatic scene in the
warehouse, the actresses finally seemed to get used to the suits,
so I became a bit cruel and changed the scene into a rainy night.
It was needed to escalate the mood.
For seven days, they bit, tore, collapsed and collided while screaming.
The crew got sick of being in the abandoned warehouse for this shoot.
They were utterly exhausted. Up to the point where tears fell from
their eyes. Like hitting and getting beaten, the actors, crew, and
I overall feel as if we went through a gruesome fight, as our bodies
got really fatigued. We're on the last leg of the shoot. I pray
that the crew doesn't get hurt and we wrap up this production safely.
